RACING CUP PLANS FURTHER SUCCESS IN ’07

The Volkswagen Racing Cup looks set for another season of success in 2007, say championship organisers.

Once again the Hankook Tyres-backed series will be the sole saloon car supporting event to the prestigious British Formula 3 and British GT Championships, with 12 races planned at six weekend events at the UK’s top circuits.

‘This is the third season that the Volkswagen Racing Cup has enjoyed the status of sole saloon support to British F3/GT,’ said Volkswagen Racing UK director Sam Roach, ‘and that is an indication of the strength of the championship and the high regard in which it is held.

‘We are particularly pleased with the format of the provisional calendar, which will see us visit the popular Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit again, as well as Oulton Park, Donington Park and Snetterton, and also the championship’s return to Silverstone and to Rockingham.’

Roach reports strong interest from prospective competitors: ‘There is lots of interest at the moment, and quite a number of prospective new drivers and new teams, and we are expecting several cars new to the championship also.’

Draft regulations will be released to competitors soon. These will follow the established principle of recent seasons in providing stability and a firm base on which competitors can develop a long-term strategy. One rule change proposed for 2007 is to limit to six the number of slick Hankooks which competitors may use in a weekend.

Among the further attractions for competitors are Sky Sports TV coverage and an extensive paddock race centre.

Among the drivers who have already pledged to return to the Racing Cup in 2007 is reigning champion Paul Taylor with his Golf R32. He will be joined by former Stock Hatch frontrunners Darren Blumson, in a Beetle RSi, and Richard Kingsnorth, who will drive a TDI-powered Golf.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup in association with Hankook enjoys the additional support of Augustus Martin, Castrol, ECM Vehicle Delivery, Europcar, Milltek Sport, Mondial Assistance, KW Automotive, Superchips, TNT Logistics, Turbo Dynamics, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Financial Services UK.
