BRITON DANIEL LLOYD WINS SCIROCCO R-CUP FINALE AT HOCKENHEIM
News from Volkswagen
The term heart stopping finale was never more appropriate than at the tenth and final round of the Scirocco R-Cup 2011 where British rookie Daniel Lloyd won the most spectacular and exciting race of the season.
The 19-year old Briton prevailed in the Scirocco R Cup season finale after a dramatic ten lap battle around the 4.574 kilometre long Hockenheim track. He nevertheless narrowly missed the championship runner-up title as Ola Nilsson claimed second place in the overall standings behind Champion Mateusz Lisowski thanks to finishing the race in third place. Four-time World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen won the Legend Cup ahead of Indy 500 legend Arie Luyendyk and ex-Formula 1 driver Patrick Tambay.
Mateusz Lisowski had already been crowned as the 2011 season champion before the race weekend, but four drivers, Ola Nilsson, Daniel Lloyd, Stefano Proetto and Aditya Patel, were all still in contention for the coveted runner-up slot. The race began with a strong start from Lloyd who overtook pole sitter Lisowski early. A chase group developed and Lloyd, Lisowski and Nilsson battled hard for the lead along with Junior Cup drivers Moritz Oestreich and Dennis Trebing. The young American, Trebing, even took the lead briefly with a brilliant overtaking manoeuvre on the seventh lap.
At the flag, Lloyd salvaged victory after crossing the line ahead of Trebing, while Nilsson took the final podium position thanks to a clever use of the push-to-pass system on the final lap. As a result the top three positions in the Scirocco R-Cup 2011 final standings are confirmed: 1st Mateusz Lisowski (416 points), 2nd Ola Nilsson (355), 3rd Daniel Lloyd (351).
The Legend Cup competitors enjoyed a highly entertaining race which rally ace Juha Kankkunen won in the end. The Finn was able to overtake Indy 500 Champion Arie Luyendyk, who started alongside him, shortly after the start. The Dutchman, who still holds the record for the fastest Indy 500 qualifying lap at an average of 381.392 km/h, fought hard for several laps with Kankkunen before losing ground after a spin. Patrick Tambay, who won the 1982 Hockenheim Grand Prix in a Ferrari, finished third in the Legend Cup classification. Former-DTM driver Mathias Lauda, started the race as fastest guest, but after the Austrian had worked his way into the top ten he was rather unluckily helped into the gravel bed by a Scirocco Cup driver following behind.
