As Avon Tyres enters its 25th season as sole supplier to the highly-prestigious Lloyds TSB British Formula 3 International Series, the performance of its racing tyres shows no signs of slowing down, with lap records shattered the first two circuits visited this year.

At Oulton Park in Cheshire, Swede Sebastien Hohenthal and Briton Jonathan Kennard both lapped under the record established by Nelson Piquet Jr in 2004, completing the track’s 2.692 miles in an identical 1m29.491s.

Two weeks later, at Leicestershire circuit Donington Park, championship leader, Estonian Marko Asmer, destroyed the old lap record by more than a second, setting a blistering pace of 1m01.594s in the first of two races that weekend.

While the series heading to Romanian capital Bucharest for the very first time in its third round on May 20, this weekend’s fourth round at Snetterton, Norfolk, could see a hat trick of lap records broken.

Avon Tyres motorsport chief, and managing director of Avon’s parent company, Cooper Tire Europe, Julian Baldwin, said: “The 2007 season is a major landmark for our association with the British F3 championship, which has produced drivers of the calibre of Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Jenson Button.

“But the searing pace that the series’ drivers have set in the first two race meetings of the season show that we are by no means getting complacent with our development process.  We strive every day to develop our racing tyres further, giving competitors the kind of quality and grip they need to produce stunning performances like this.”

David Hayle, team boss of top team Hitech Racing, said: “Avon has done a really good job with the tyre.  The new tyre is more durable and the window of opportunity for doing a lap time is greater.  With this tyre, you can run and run and, if you have an enforced delay, you’ll still have a chance of doing a time.  It is very different, and a huge improvement.”
