Why Matte Matters
News from Totally Dynamic
It started with stealth. It’s dark and dangerous. And it purrs with power. Like a Stealth fighter sweeping in low under the radar, matte black has been precision-targeting style-conscious supercar owners across the UK.
The ‘Stealth’ look is discreet and understated. But if you look closely, then out of the corner of your eye you’ll glimpse more and more matte black Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and Porsche’s growling through the city streets and even further beyond.
And now the trend is evolving. Matte black is giving way to shades such as matte metallic grey, matte carbon fibre, matte white, matte silver and matte green as the gloss goes off run-of-the-mill finishes.
The demand for the Matte look began with the Stealth fighter, a symbol of raw, unconstrained, untouchable power. Many high end cars replicate the aerodynamic features and styles from aviation designs and wrapping a car in matte black cuts back reflected light and provides a deep, smooth stealth look.
The matte black trend was initially embraced by Ford who wrapped all of their limited edition RS500’s in matte black, but now other manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW and Lamborghini offer matte metallic shades as a special order direct from the factory. The European car manufacturers are again leading the way and it probably won't be long before the rest of the motoring pack follows suit.
Indeed, many of them have been showcasing their latest models at shows around the world in matte metallic colours to show off the lines of the cars. Certainly there has been a noticeable swing towards matte metallic grey after BMW started offering their new M3 in Frozen Grey.
Matte black still dominates the consumer popularity charts, but leading vinyl manufacturers such as Avery Dennison and 3M are responding to the surge in demand for other matte shades by bringing out advanced matte laminates that can be applied to their extensive ranges of colour change products. Each company now offers more than 100 standard shades.
But there’s also a practical side to wrapping. The vinyl film that is applied to the car to give the matte look avoids the commitment of painting and costs a lot less than a good quality re-spray. It also protects the car from chips and scratches and, when it’s removed, the factory paint is as good as new.
There are a number of companies offering vehicle wrapping and they should have a range big enough to satisfy most customers.
Jennifer Rope, director of Totally Dynamic, the UK’s leading bespoke automotive vinyl transformation company, said: “The matte look absolutely crystallises what wrapping is all about. It transforms a car into something unique and personal, and matches the style and aspirations of the owner.
“The possibilities are enormous, there is a huge choice of standard colours available from the vinyl manufacturers and companies such as Totally Dynamic have the ability and expertise to colour-match to a desired shade. And the great thing is that if your aspirations change, you can just take it off and start again.”
