Championship leader Evans looking forward to Anglesey event

Evans has other reasons to look forward to this third round of the Quaife BRC, he finished a close second in the corresponding event last year, since when his Opel Astra has been considerably improved: "I like Anglesey, it’s a challenging track that’s good to drive and I’ve had some good results there in the past," he says. "The car was quick enough at Pembrey last month, but Tony Bardy Motorsport [who prepare the Opel] think there’s more to come and I’ve got different gear ratios as well as suspension and engine management improvements for Anglesey. It would be great to win again but I’m focused on winning the championship and I think that it’s going to be a season when consistent results will be what really counts, I’ll be happy with a top three finish and more points."
The event has a double importance for Evans and his compatriots as it also forms a points scoring round of the Irish Rallycross Championship. That series is currently led by Dermot Carnegie (Dublin) who was second in the BRC event at Pembrey last month and is now second in the British championship standings, five points behind Evans. John McCluskey (Dublin) is another searching for points in both the British and Irish championships and, after a frustrating run in round one where a puncture cost him a podium finish the Citroën driver is fighting back and is fourth in the British championship order.

Between Carnegie and McCluskey in the BRC points chart is Andrew Jordan (Sutton Coldfield). At just 16-years-old, Jordan is the youngest driver ever to race a Supercar but his impressive form in the first two events, specially at Pembrey where he was third, has forced him to rethink to his aims for the year: "We started the season hoping to score a podium finish by the end of the year, now I’m thinking that it might be possible to win an event," said Jordan.
Current champion Pat Doran (Milstead) won the first round of the championship at Lydden on Easter Monday but failed to add to his score in round two where gearbox problems afflicted his Ford Fiesta ST. A former event winner at Anglesey, Doran now knows that he must score heavily in all remaining events to stay in the championship battle.
Competitors in the two-wheel drive SuperModified category also compete for overall honours in the Quaife MSA British Rallycross Championship and best of the group after two events in Michael Boak (Newcastle upon Tyne) who has enjoyed a good start to the season with his unique Audi TT and holds fifth place in the championship, just ahead of class rival Dave Bellerby (Northallerton).
First place in the Yokohama Stock Hatch category is shared by championship favourites Rodney Green (Bromley) and Julian Godfrey (Heathfield) who, after two events each have a win and a second place to their credit. The Anglesey event is crucial for the pair, one of whom will leave with a clear lead in the championship.
Junior Rallycross with Bill Gwynne Rallyschool International
The Junior championship (for drivers aged 14 to 16-years driving 1000cc Minis) has a clear leader in the shape of Kyle Orr (Dromore) who has taken maximum points from each of the first two rounds.
Liam Harrison (Oakley) has worked his way up the points chart and now holds second place having finished third in each of the first two rounds. Third place is held by Ben Rennison (Richmond) with another driver from Northern Ireland, Matthew Nesbitt (Armagh) in fourth place. Further down the order is Ben Power (Welshpool) who failed to score points in round one where his car was struck by mechanical problems, but who started his recovery with a fine second place to Orr in round two.
Local drivers in the BTRDA Clubmans championship
Three drivers from North Wales will start in the supporting BTRDA Clubmans championship section of the Anglesey event.
Mini driver John Heath (Llandudno) shares points lead in the SuperModified section [with Tunbridge Wells-based Bill Harbour] of the championship which excludes the most successful drivers and is aimed at drivers starting in the sport and those competing on a limited budget.
Racing in the Stock Hatch category are Paul Edwards and Rhydian Evans. While the event will be the first for Peugeot 205 GTi driver Edwards (Wrexham) it marks both a return to racing and a homecoming for Evans. Currently living and working in London, Evans is originally from Anglesey and has family in Llansadwrn, but despite being a confirmed motor sport fan only got his chance to compete after winning his car in a competition run by by the British Rallycross Drivers Association, the British championship organiser. Work has kept Evans away from the tracks for the last year but with his car based at the local Coleg Menai where it is prepared and maintained by the students in the Automotive Engineering department, the Anglesey event is the ideal point at which to return to Rallycross.
